If so, what is my deadline?

Candidates

  1. How do I withdraw?
  2. Any candidate who chooses to withdraw from the assessment process is responsible for notifying NBPTS in writing by one of the following options:

    • Login to My Profile, select Status, and scroll to the bottom of the page. You will see a question that begins "Do you need to ...." with a link beneath it that asks "Withdraw your application?" If you complete and submit this form, you are immediately withdrawn.

    • You may also submit an online written inquiry through Ask NBPTS (within My Profile under My Inbox). A request submitted this way will be processed within three to five business days.

    • As an alternative, you may complete the Withdrawal Form included in your portfolio kit and submit it to NBPTS in one of the following ways:

      Mail: NBPTS Processing Center
              11827 Tech Com, Suite 200
              San Antonio, Texas 78233

      Fax: 888-811-3514

  3. If I withdraw, will I be eligible for a refund?
  4. You may be eligible for a refund of your candidate fee, less the $500 nonrefundable portion (minus any fees paid to modify your candidate record), if your Withdrawal Form is received prior to your original portfolio deadline and before your scheduled assessment center appointment.

No refund requests will be honored after your portfolio deadline or after your assessment center appointment date has passed.

All outstanding assessment center appointments must be cancelled prior to requesting a refund and no refunds will be processed until outstanding appointments are cancelled. You will be responsible for canceling any previously scheduled assessment center appointments prior to requesting a refund. Finally, if a third-party payer provided any portion of your fee, notify them of your withdrawal if required to do so. No full refund requests will be honored, regardless of the circumstances.

  5. I am a first-time candidate preparing to submit my portfolio entries, but I am not able to complete all of them before the portfolio deadline. Can I defer any of the entries?
  6. Deferment is not an option during your first year. Any entries (or exercises) you do not submit will be carried over into retake status. It will be necessary to apply to complete those entries (or exercises) when you submit your retake application and pay the associated retake fees. Candidates who cannot complete their portfolio should always check with their third party payer to see if the third party payer can enact repercussions (i.e., repayment of the assessment fee) if a candidate does not submit a completed portfolio.

Your eligibility will expire if you do not submit at least one portfolio entry by the March 31 deadline or take an assessment center exercise prior to June 15.

  7. What happens if I requested a retake, but then cannot complete a portfolio entry or assessment center exercise?
  8. If after paying the retake fee for one or more portfolio entries or assessment center exercises, you find that you cannot complete your portfolio retake entries or take your assessment center retake exercises during the assessment center testing window, you may choose to defer submitting a new response for up to one year, provided you are still eligible to retake.

Your retake fee will not be refunded, and NBPTS will require $125 per portfolio entry or assessment center exercise to reinstate your deferred retakes. To defer, your request must be submitted prior to the deadline for submission of retake portfolio entries, and at least 10 business days prior to the end of your designated assessment center testing window designated for retaking exercises (or ten business days prior to your scheduled assessment center appointment).

Login to My Profile, select Status, and scroll to the bottom of the page. You will see a question that begins "Do you need to ...." with a link beneath it that asks "Manage your retake application?" Select this link and you will be taken to your retake application where you can make and submit your deferral choices.

You may also submit an online written inquiry through Ask NBPTS (within My Profile under My Inbox). A request submitted this way will be processed within three to five business days.

As an alternative, you may submit your deferral request in writing to NBPTS in one of the following ways:

    • Mail: NBPTS Processing Center
      11827 Tech Com, Suite 200
      San Antonio, Texas 78233
    • Fax: 888-811-3514

No assessment center exercises can be deferred after June 1. Once you submit a deferral request, a new retake application is generated for the subsequent assessment cycle that reflects the deferred entries/exercises. In the following year, you will access the retake application through My Products and pay the deferment fee(s). If you fail to access the new retake application and pay the deferment fee, you will forfeit all fees paid. You cannot defer any portfolio entries or assessment center exercises if you are in your last year of eligibility. Retake submissions can only be deferred once.

  9. Will my eligibility period be extended if I elect to defer a retake entry or exercise?
  10. No. When you elect to defer a portfolio retake entry or assessment center retake exercise, you are effectively declining one retake opportunity. Retakes must be taken within your 24-month eligibility period that begins with the date printed on your score report as a first-time candidate. No extensions of the retake period will be granted.

Renewal

  1. What if I can't complete the renewal process after I apply? Can I withdraw?
  2. NBCTs who apply for renewal may withdraw from the process at any time. In order to receive a refund of the renewal fee (minus the nonrefundable $300 application fee), candidates for renewal must notify NBPTS by submitting a signed written request prior to the deadline for submission of the Profile of Professional Growth. Please remember that renewal candidates will forego their opportunity to renew their certification if they withdraw from the process during their last year to seek renewal before their certificate expires.

  3. Will refunds be available for renewal candidates?
  4. Yes. Candidates for renewal who withdraw and request a refund in writing prior to the original submission deadline for their Profile of Professional Growth will receive a refund of the fee paid, minus the initial $300 nonrefundable application fee. A renewal candidate who defers their PPG submission will not be eligible for a refund.

  5. Can I withdraw from my second attempt and receive a refund?
  6. Yes. Candidates for renewal who withdraw and request a refund prior to the resubmission deadline for their Profile of Professional Growth will receive a refund of the fee paid minus the $300 nonrefundable application fee. Renewal candidates should submit a request to withdraw on the Withdrawal Form. Requests for refunds of the full renewal fee will not be honored, regardless of the circumstances.

  3. Can I withdraw from Take One! and request a refund?
  4. NBPTS will accept withdrawal requests from the time a participant applies until the entry submittal deadline.

To withdraw and receive a partial refund, you must submit the Take One! Withdrawal Form to NBPTS within 60 days of the order date. The refund excludes the nonrefundable materials fee of $100. If you make a withdrawal request after the 60-day limit, you will not be subject to a refund.

  5. What if I can't complete my Take One! entry by the submittal deadline?
  6. If you are unable to complete your entry by the deadline, you have the option to defer. Through the deferral process you can extend your  deadline and score release date by one year.

If you choose to defer, you must notify NBPTS of your decision before the material entry submission deadline of April 15.

  7. I became a participant in Take One! during the 2008-2009 cycle and had to defer to the 2009-2010 cycle. When I returned to class this school year, my teaching assignment changed and my students are in a different age group. Can I change my certificate choice after deferring? If so, what is my deadline?
  8. Yes, you can change your certificate as long as you submit your request for change and the $75 change fee by January 31st of the year your entry is due, in this case 2010.
