Student Learning and Student Achievement Webinar

(March 4, 2011) NBPTS will formally release a report outlining effective methods of using student learning as a measure of teacher effectiveness via an interactive webcast on Thursday, March 10, 2011, from 6:00–7:00 p.m. EST.  The report, Student Learning, Student Achievement: How Do Teachers Measure Up?, was generated by an NBPTS task force composed of some of the most prominent voices in education.

Successful State and Local Approaches to Effective Teaching 

Education Reform using National Board Certification

(October 6, 2010) Districts and states throughout the country increasingly are using system-wide collaborations to transform their schools using National Board programs and National Board Certified Teachers. On Wednesday, October 6, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is hosting a briefing and panel discussion to showcase four such successful states and districts and nationwide implications:

Montgomery County Public Schools.  As part of an innovative union-district partnership, Montgomery County Public Schools is using the National Board framework in the professional development, hiring and evaluation of all teachers in the county.  Release of new profile!

Wyoming.  A Wyoming-based foundation is successfully bringing together businesses, districts and schools to raise the learning and achievement of all children in Wyoming by expanding the numbers and impact of National Board Certified Teachers in the state. Release of new profile!

Washington State.  Washington State is successfully using a statewide coalition among government, unions and the private sector to recruit, support and leverage National Board Certified Teachers as teacher leaders and change agents in advancing teacher quality reform efforts.

Chicago.  A Chicago-based coalition of public and private organizations are leveraging National Board Certification in a district-wide human capital initiative to build a critical mass of high-performing teacher leaders in the district.

Using a Statewide Coalition to Transform Teaching

(July 19, 2010) Please join NBPTS at a panel discussion and reception highlighting the new report and national implications for Profiles in Excellence - Washington State Using a Statewide Coalition to Transform Teaching through National Board Certification.  This event will be held at Sheraton Seattle Hotel, Rooms Diamond A and B; Seattle, Washington at 5 pm.  The NBPTS Briefing and Reception are free to invited guests and NSDC attendees. 2010 Summer Advocacy Institute

(June - August 2010) Starting June 15, learn how to make the teacher voice heard in the NBPTS Summer Advocacy Institute, a series of webinars targeted for NBCTs.  From letter writing to visits with legislators, get the tips and tricks from experienced NBCTs, NBPTS staff, and education advocates.  Register now for the six-part webinar series.

  

2010 ESEA Reauthorization: Getting the Teacher Voice

(Spring/Summer 2010) Discuss the blueprint for the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act released by the Department of Education.  The first set of webinars included presentations and Q&A with Assistant Secretary for Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development Carmel Martin and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning, Evaluation, and Policy Development Judy Wurtzel.  Future events will include townhall meetings.  Materials for the recorded webinars, including the Powerpoint presentation, webinar transcript, and survey results from webinar participants are currently available.  A townhall meeting with the Department of Education to continue the conversation is still under discussion for this summer!

 

2010 State Farm Virtual Leadership Institute

(March 2010) Expand leadership skills and grow personal networks in this webinar series.  NBCTs can learn more about getting involved with education reform, service learning and research, while developing personal networks with NBCTLink and NBPTS Network affiliates. 

 

Certification Day 2009

(Dec. 16, 2009) The teacher quality movement made a dramatic gain. Nearly 8,900 teachers achieved National Board Certification in 2009—bringing the total number of the nation’s top teachers to more than 82,000.

 

National Board Certification for Principals

(Dec. 8, 2009) NBPTS was joined by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, some of the nation’s leading foundations as well as business and educational leaders at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. to publicly announce the design and development of National Board Certification for Principals.

 

NBPTS Policy Forums

(Oct. 21, 2009) Education leaders from across the country gathered at the National Press Club for the National Board Certification as School Reform forum. These leaders described how cohorts of National Board Certified Teachers successfully raised student achievement and enhanced learning in high-need schools.

NBPTS Conference

(July 15-18, 2009) “New Voices, New Visions: Teaching for Tomorrow, Today” marked the theme of the conference that allowed attendees to hear first-hand from educators who are changing schools across the country.  Additionally, participants learned about new ways to integrate technology into their everyday practices.

 

White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities

(June 9, 2009) Sponsored by The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in collaboration with the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, this forum was a national strategy meeting about increasing the number of graduates from HBCUs who enter the teaching profession and ultimately choose to pursue National Board Certification. Hosted at the Department of Education, the forum included the participation of representatives from education associations and groups, as well as HBCUs.

 

Hill Day

(July 16, 2008) NBPTS Hill Days are an opportunity for NBCTs to learn the ins and outs of meeting with legislators to discuss education issues. During the 2008 NBPTS Hill Day, small groups of NBCTs, led by state team leaders, met with their Congressional members and staff to promote National Board Certification.  View the photo album from this event.

 

Higher Education Invitational Conference

(Mar. 6-8, 2008) More than 150 administrators and faculty from institutions of higher education (IHE) as well as NBCTs and other professional development providers attended this conference sponsored by NBPTS. Conference participants were provided with an awareness and clarity on higher education accountability issues. They also defined terms relating to professional development and standards; reflected on best practices; and assessed, renewed or changed their alignment with NBPTS Standards. Wingspread Conference

(Oct. 22-24, 2007) The Johnson Foundation, in honor of the NBPTS 20th anniversary, gathered education leaders, scholars, policymakers and NBCTs for 20/20: Clarifying a Vision for Quality Teaching at the Wingspread Conference Center in Racine, Wis.

 

Teacher Leadership Policy Summits

(2006 - 2007) NBPTS, NBCTs and key state education stakeholders discussed and developed strategies and policy recommendations for getting and keeping accomplished teachers in high-needs schools in a series of policy summits. The National Education Association acted as primary partner for the summits. Reports of state summits were written with the help of the Center for Teaching Quality.
