NBPTS now offers online professional learning courses for middle and high school mathematics teachers from pre-service through accomplished teachers. The courses uses Algebra examples but, with a primary focus on mathematics pedagogy, are appropriate to all grade 5-12 mathematics teachers. The courses are not designed to prepare candidates for National Board Certification, but to improve teaching practice and student learning for all mathematics teachers in alignment with NBPTS standards for mathematics teaching.
In this course, you will examine the learning goals you have for a lesson, how different types of goals (conceptual, procedural, factual) connect with each other, and how you will show evidence of student achievement of those goals. This foundation helps assure that your mathematics goals are met and that students demonstrate evidence of achieving those goals. Graduate credits are available for successful course participants. See the full course listing for more details.
Courses are offered through PBS TeacherLine beginning in January, March, June, and October. Spaces in the online course are limited, so register for the next course today to assure your spot. Courses are facilitated by NBCTs certified in mathematics.
In this course you will deepen your knowledge of how to effectively guide student learning based on NBPTS standards for mathematics teaching. Focusing on key instructional areas such as descriptive student profiles, developing a classroom culture focused on mathematics learning, aligning goals with instructional methods, and checking for understanding during lessons, this course helps 5th- to 12th- grade teachers improve student achievement of mathematics goals.
Note: While Course 1 is not a required precursor to Course 2, if both courses are taken they provide an integrated approach to examining and developing your mathematics teaching practice.

Accomplished Mathematics Instruction is the result of The Mathematics Teaching Project, a grant-supported project that analyzed aggregated teacher performance assessment data from NBPTS’ mathematics assessment and created a professional learning program based on that analysis. The professional learning program is organized around National Board standards and the Five Core Propositions and relied on National Board Certified Teachers in EA and AYA Mathematics for product design, development, and evaluation.
The project began with an analysis of teacher assessment data for the middle and high school mathematics entries of the National Board assessment. This analysis led NBPTS to focus on a subset of assessment entries. The entries included video of the teachers in their classroom and a reflective analysis of the videoed instruction, and student work samples and teacher analysis of those work samples.
This work was aligned with the data drawn from the skills and experience of trained assessors who examine these entries and with recommendations from the project’s external advisory committee. This phase provided the project with rich information on areas where mathematics teachers experience challenges – information based on what teachers actually do in the classroom and that is not readily available nationally by any other means.
The result of the analysis was the design of a series of community-based, facilitated online professional learning courses, in collaboration with Education Development Center. The first two courses were first 2010-11. Additional courses will be developed based on funding availability.
The online courses are intended for all middle and high school mathematics teachers from pre-service through veteran teachers. The content area used for exemplars in the courses is algebra. The course is not designed to prepare candidates for National Board Certification, but to improve teaching practice and student learning outcomes for all mathematics teachers.
The Mathematics Teaching Project was supported with a generous grant from the Oracle Corporation®.
