Indiana Candidate Financial Support

Indiana is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines and contact information.

Funding Available

Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) is pleased to support candidates for National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification. Federal funding will subsidize teachers for $1,250 of the $2,500 assessment fee. Candidates will be responsible for submitting the nonrefundable $500 intial fee (along with the $65 application processing charge) to NBPTS prior to receiving federal funding.

Indiana is committed to assisting teachers striving for certification with funding and support sessions designed to encourage networking with other candidates. The Indiana Professional Standards Board awards a 5-year license renewal for teachers that complete the candidate process in their license area and they may continue to pursue certification through retakes. Teachers earning their National Board Certification receive a 10-year teaching license renewal in the same area of current licensure. Teachers who agree to accept subsidy funding will be expected to attend at least three support meetings held in central Indiana. Notification of meeting dates, times and agendas are sent to funding recipients as scheduled.

Many school corporations throughout Indiana offer days for portfolio completion, additional funding, video equipment to candidates and monetary compensation to teachers that earn National Board Certification. Please check with your school corporation on the most up-to-date resources available.

Teachers will also be expected to complete the process on time and according to National Board Certification guidelines.  For additional information about the National Board Certification process, please contact www.nbpts.org or 1-800-22-TEACH. Candidates will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis through the subsidy coordinator's office. Indiana's Subsidy Administrator, Deborah A. Rode, NBCT is also available to answer your questions via e-mail (drode@greencastle.k12.in.us or debrode@aol.com)  or phone: 765-653-9774.

• In June, 1997, the Indiana Professional Standards Board (IPSB) approved a new assessment system for Indiana education professionals that encompasses a staged system of licensure/re-licensure. Beginning in 2003, teachers certified by NBPTS will be eligible for the Accomplished Practitioner License under the performance-based licensing system. In June 1998, the IPSB approved a waiver of current continuing education requirements for teachers who complete the NBPTS certification process and are renewing a standard license, effective until new continuing education rules are promulgated.

• Public Law 221 established a grant system through the Indiana Department of Education to fund school improvement plans with the goal of improving student learning. The school improvement plan must include a professional development component and monies may be used for National Board Certification for teachers.
