Michigan Candidate Financial Support

Michigan is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines and contact information.

Funding Available


Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The Michigan Department of Education will utilize NBPTS Candidate Subsidy funds to support approximately 73 candidates at 50% of the certification fee.  Deadline to apply: December 1, 2008.

Funding Available Retake Candidates
Michigan does not provide funds for retake candidates.

Several organizations provide scholarship support to candidates pursuing National Board Certification. For more information, visit the Scholarship page.

State Information


• The Michigan State Board of Education has determined that teachers who enter the National Board Certification process and complete the portfolio component of the assessment may be eligible to receive 9 SB-CEUs (one-half of the required 18) for renewal of the Professional Education Certificate and 9 SD-CEUs for the testing portion.  Teachers must work with their teacher unions to obtain the SB-CEUs. National Board CertifiedTeachers will receive a renewal of the Professional Certificate, with a validity matching that of the National Board Certification. National Board Certified Teachers holding the Provisional Certificate will receive their initial Professional Education Certificate with a validity matching that of the National Board Certification.


• The state of Michigan has signed the 2005-2010 NASDTEC Interstate Contract and will award their highest level certificate to any person who has obtained National Board Certification in an area corresponding to that for which certification is sought, provided the applicant also holds a comparable and valid certificate issued by any Member state and has complied with any requirements of the receiving state regarding experience, degrees held, citizenship, and moral, ethical, physical, and mental fitness, and completion of any post-baccalaureate study required by the receiving Member.
