State Information

Teachers engaged in National Board Certification candidacy activities may have such efforts considered by their employing school district in satisfaction of all or some of the New York State professional development requirements for the appropriate five-year professional development period. Teachers holding National Board Certification may be deemed in full satisfaction of the New York State professional development requirement.

  • Participating public school districts with schools designated as low-performing may assign a National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT) to serve as a designated Master Teacher in these schools to assist in mentoring new teachers. Such Master Teachers may serve in a low-performing building for up to three years and may receive an annual stipend of $10,000, if the local school district applies and is approved by the state.
  • The state of New York has signed the 2005-2010 NASDTEC Interstate Contract; however, New York State does not regard all current NBPTS certificate areas with the same measure of comparability. Learn more on the New York State Education Department Web site. Additionally:
      • A teacher who holds a certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) may obtain a New York State certificate in a comparable title, without meeting any additional education or testing requirements, through the National Board Pathway. Most, but not all, National Board Certification titles correspond to New York State certificate titles. Review the chart of NBPTS Certificate Titles and Comparable NYS Certificate Titles.
      • A teacher who holds National Board Certification for which there is no comparable title in New York State, such as in the sciences, languages other than English and special education, may apply under the Reciprocity Pathway or Individual Evaluation Pathway.
