New Jersey Candidate Financial Support

New Jersey is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines, and contact information.

Funding Available


Funding Available - First-Time Candidates State Funding
The New Jersey Department of Education will provide a subsidy of $625 in state funds to candidates. Candidates will be selected on a first come, first served basis and must meet NBPTS eligiblity guidelines. All first-time candidates who are interested in receiving funding must complete the New Jersey Candidate Subsidy Application.

Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The New Jersey Department of Education will provide $1,250 in federal subsidy funds to candidates applying for National Board Certification on a first-come, first-served basis. and must meet NBPTS eligibility guidelines.  Federal funds are available each calendar year and are subject to federal appropriation guidelines. Deadline to Apply: December 31, 2008

Funding Available Retake Candidates
New Jersey does not provide funding for retake candidates.

State Information


• The Department of Education approved a 100-hour professional development requirement every five years for teachers.  National Board Certification is an approved professional development activity and is applicable towards this requirement.

• The state of New Jersey has signed the 2005-2010 NASDTEC Interstate Contract and will award their highest level certificate to any person who has obtained National Board Certification in an area corresponding to that for which certification is sought, provided the applicant also holds a comparable and valid certificate issued by any Member state and has complied with any requirements of the receiving state regarding experience, degrees held, citizenship, and moral, ethical, physical, and mental fitness, and completion of any post-baccalaureate study required by the receiving Member.
