The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (National Board) is the nation’s pre-eminent standards-setting board in teaching. Since 1987, the National Board has certified more than 122,000 accomplished teachers through the rigorous performance-based, peer-reviewed process of National Board Certification. The National Board is pursuing an ambitious agenda to scale Board certification throughout the teaching profession, with the aim of strengthening a differentiated, performance-based career continuum for teachers and, ultimately, building teaching into the true profession it deserves to be.

Job Summary:

The National Board seeks a dedicated, driven, collaborative professional to serve as the Chief of Staff, providing strategic support to the President / CEO and the Chief Operating Officer and reporting to the Chief Operating Officer. The Chief of Staff will play a vital cross-functional role to ensure the National Board is achieving its strategic objectives and organizational goals. The successful candidate will have at least 10 years of experience in education and/or nonprofit organizations and will bring strengths in effective strategic planning, efficient implementation, organizational development, and systemic problem-solving.

The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker and a pragmatic doer; bring expertise in strategic planning, project management, change management, and organizational development; and will strengthen the organization’s coherence and impact toward its strategic goals and mission.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:

  • Advance Senior Leadership Team Effectiveness and Organizational Success
    • Manage and support the process for developing and tracking annual organizational strategic goals and strategies as well as departmental strategic plans and budgets
    • Oversee and coordinate Senior Leadership Team meetings and retreats, including agenda creation, preparation, facilitation, and follow-up
    • Assist the Senior Leadership Team in leveraging the expertise, counsel, and relationships of the National Board’s Board of Directors
    • Shepherd time-sensitive priorities, engaging staff across the organization as necessary (such as external partner engagement opportunities)
    • Act as a key thought partner, brainstorming & identifying solutions to challenges, to the President / CEO and the Chief Operating Officer, as well as the Senior Leadership Team, on matters of priority to the National Board
  • Strengthen Internal Communications and External Relationship Management
    • Implement internal communication norms and best practices among National Board Senior Leadership Team and staff
    • Oversee the creation of briefings and associated materials in preparation for priority external meetings
    • Support effective and efficient communications with the Board of Directors, in collaboration with the Corporate Secretary
  • Improve Organizational Culture and Development:
    • Strengthen structures for role clarity and decision-making clarity across the organization
    • Coordinate structures for effective collaboration across the organization, especially on cross-functional projects or topics
    • In collaboration with Human Resources, lead the design and implementation of staff engagement and feedback structures
    • In collaboration with Human Resources, strengthen internal feedback processes, including entry and exit interviews, and assist with talent searches
  • Special Projects:
    • Provide support and leadership to special projects as appropriate, especially new projects and cross-functional projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Summary of Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in business or related field required
  • 8-10 years of direct experience, including years of managerial experience, in the field of education, preferably at a national level

  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
