National Endowment for the Humanities Reinvigorated My Teaching Career, and We Should Want More of That
Jonathon Medeiros, NBCTJanuary 22, 2018

“The world belongs to those who can imagine it.” – Luis Valdez Teachers hear many voices over the course of a career. We hear our own voices driving us. We hear students’ voices. We hear the voices of the public, sometimes calling us names, and the voices of our colleagues and administrators calling us in many directions at once. We also hear voices echoing from offices at the District or State or farther afield. Luis Valdez, activist, playwright, and director of Teatro Campesino, was a guest lecturer and inspiring voice at a summer course I attended recently. We studied the…

“Why are you still in the classroom?”
Laura Bradley, NBCTSeptember 20, 2018

My first year of teaching was so traumatic that 30 years later I still shudder at the memories. Not only was I woefully unprepared for the challenges of working with middle school students, but I had no idea how to plan engaging lessons and long-term units. I remember sitting alone at my desk on a staff development day, after our principal told us to work on our year plan. I stared at my blank lesson plan book and thought, “I don’t know what I’m doing next week, let alone next month and the rest of the year!” Of course I…

Connecting with other NBCTs provides the support that Teacher Leaders Need
Jennifer Dines, NBCTSeptember 4, 2019

Like many National Board Certified Teachers, I am proud to say that I serve in multiple teacher leadership roles in my school and within our district. My most demanding responsibility is serving as the leader of our school’s brand new Literacy Committee. Our school-wide instructional goal for the 2018-19 school year was to increase the number of grade-level readers in our building. And we did – increasing from 2.7% of students reading at grade level to 21.3%. This accomplishment took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears; our team was allotted 25 paid hours throughout the year to analyze data,…

Teacher Agency Unleashed
Weidenhammer March 7, 2016

A version of old professional development joke goes something like this: A man dies and goes to heaven. Passing the pearly gates, he notices that there are plenty of folks from all professions and walks of life standing around, but no teachers. “Where are all the teachers?” he inquires of God. “Oh, they’re in professional development,” God replies. “In hell.” I used to tell various iterations of that joke to teachers when I was an instructional resource teacher in my district’s Office of Staff Development. (This version is from Edweek.) The fact that we had to acknowledge these expectations and…

Incentives for Illinois NBCTs: Illinois Professional Educator Reciprocity

Illinois now offers full reciprocity for out-of-state teachers. The minimum requirements for an Illinois Professional Educator License for educators trained in other states include a bachelor’s degree and a comparable and valid educator license or certificate. What incentives are offered to NBCTs teaching in Illinois? Illinois offers a one-time $3,000 incentive for NBCTs in eligible rural/remote school districts. Please check this list of eligible school districts again in late spring 2021, as more districts may be added due to the release of updated Census information and a possible update in statue for eligibility requirements. Also, many Illinois school districts offer incentives for…
