Teacher Preparation & Professional Development

NBPTS recognizes the importance of collaboration with higher education institutions and other education providers to boost the quality of teaching in this country and provide a continuum of support for potential or current candidates for National Board Certification.

 

National Board Resource Centers

Housed at higher education institutions in California, Florida and Illinois, the National Board Resource Centers provide candidate support, coursework, mentoring and other professional development.  The goal is to strengthen teaching and learning in the classroom.

 

Publications and Tools

NBPTS is continuously creating guidelines and tools for colleges and universities interested in aligning their degree pre-service programs and in-service professional development programs with NBPTS standards. 

 

Research on the Impact of NBCTs and National Board Certification

Many studies have examined National Board Certification and the vast majority found NBCTs make a significantly measurable impact on teacher performance and student learning, engagement and achievement.  The National Research Council report from the National Academies affirms many of the positive findings by other research.  Many of these studies are conducted by university researchers.

 

Program Accreditation Tool (PAT)

NBPTS, in conjunction with NCATE, launched an Accreditation Tool to help higher education institutions align their courses and degree programs with National Board Standards and to assist with NCATE accreditation. This online tool aligns NBPTS and NCATE standards and shows users how to collect evidence to meet both sets of standards.
