Maryland Candidate Financial Support

Maryland is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education and funds the state of Maryland. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines and contact information.

Funding Available


Funding Available - First-Time Candidates State Funding
Senate Bill of 2004 extends the life of the Maryland State & Local Aid Program for Certification until May 31, 2008.  The Program will support a maximum of 750 teachers at two-thirds of the fee with each county providing the remaining one-thrid.

Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The Maryland State Department of Education will utilize NBPTS Candidate Subsidy funds to support candidates selected by local school systems. Local school systems will select candidates according to guidelines specified in Education Article Section 6-112. Deadline to apply: May 31, 2008

Funding Available Retake Candidates
Maryland does not provide funds for retake candidates.

Several organizations provide scholarship support to candidates pursuing National Board Certification. For more information, visit the Scholarship page.

State Information


The Maryland State Department of Education will match up to $2,000 any stipend offered at the local level to NBCTs and grant CEU equivalents to teachers who complete the National Board Certification Process.  Regulatory changes in 2002 grant the Advanced Professional Certificate, the highest certificate in Maryland, to any teacher who achieves National Board Certification and earns a minimum of 12 semester hours of approved graduate course work.
