West Virginia Candidate Financial Support

West Virginia is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines and contact information.

Funding Available


Funding Available - First-Time Candidates State Funding
Effective July 1, 2006, the state will reimburse half of  the National Board Certification fee upon enrollment in the program, and the remainder upon completion of  10 scorable entries, as verified by NBPTS. This fee reimbursement is subject to legislative appropriation and shall be limited to 200 teachers annually.

Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The West Virginia Department of Education does not provide federal subsidy for first-time candidates.

Funding Available Retake Candidates
The West Virginia Department of Education will assign all federal subsidy funding to be used to support up to $600 in retake fee waivers per eligible West Virginia candidate.  A retake candidate is eligible for federal subsidy if you have never received federal subsidy assistance through the Candidate Subsidy Program.  Deadline to Apply: WINDOW CLOSED

State Information


• Each teacher who achieves National Board Certification shall be paid $3,500 annually for the life of the certification. In order to be eligible for this supplement, the NBCT must submit the appropriate application (Form 12) and processing fee ($15) for advanced salary classification. The salary supplement is paid in equal increments throughout the year.

• National Board Certified Teachers will be reimbursed up to $600 for expenses incurred while pursuing National Board Certification (candidates, who used this amount for a retake waiver, are not eligible for the reimbursement).

• An individual who holds certification through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is exempt from the state Praxis test requirements for initial certification.

• The state of West Virginia has signed the 2005-2010 NASDTEC Interstate Contract and will award their highest level certificate to any person who has obtained National Board Certification in an area corresponding to that for which certification is sought, provided the applicant also holds a comparable and valid certificate issued by any Member state and has complied with any requirements of the receiving state regarding experience, degrees held, citizenship, and moral, ethical, physical, and mental fitness, and completion of any post-baccalaureate study required by the receiving Member.
