National Board Certification ®
Created by teachers, for teachers, National Board Certification is the profession’s mark of accomplished teaching. It is:
- Built upon National Board Standards and the Five Core Propositions
- Rigorous and performance-based
- Based on multiple measures
- Valid and reliable
To date, more than 112,000 teachers in all 50 states and the District of Columbia have achieved National Board Certification.
Research shows that the students of Board-certified teachers learn more than students in other classrooms, which is why many states and districts offer incentives for teachers to pursue Board certification.

Every student in America deserves to be taught by accomplished, Board-certified teachers. To meet this goal, the National Board is currently revising the certification process to incorporate the latest research on best practices in teaching and to remove barriers so that more teachers have the opportunity to achieve certification.
Candidates can still pursue certification during the revision process. Learn more on the candidate website.
