Virginia Candidate Financial Support

Virginia is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education. Please read the information below for specific details, deadlines and contact information.

Funding Available


Funding Available - First-Time Candidates State Funding
Legislative appropriation provides for $1,000 portion of the fee for 75 candidates. Candidates will be selected randomly by a specified deadline. Priority will be given to teachers from hard-to-staff schools with the balance of the funding distributed among the eight superintendents' regions in the state. Candidates must meet NBPTS eligibility guidelines.

Funding Available - First-Time Candidates Federal Funding
The Virginia Department of Education will utilize NBPTS Candidate Subsidy funds to support as many candidates as funding will allow at $1,000 of the certification fee. 
Deadline to apply:  March 9-November 30, 2008


Funding Available Retake Candidates
Virginia will provide funding for eligible retake candidates.  Deadline to apply: WINDOW CLOSED

Scholarships


Several organizations provide scholarship support to candidates pursuing National Board Certification. For more information, visit the Scholarship page.

State Information


  • Legislation has established the National Teacher Certification Incentive Reward Program and Fund.  Administered by the Virginia Department of Education, the program will provide incentive grants to public school teachers achieving National Board Certification, and, to the extent that funds are available, an initial award not to exceed $5,000 with a subsequent annual award of $2,500 for the life the certificate. 
  • National Board Certified Teachers may earn up to 180 professional development points toward license renewal. 
  • Legislation directs the Virginia Board of Education to provide for license reciprocity for individuals holding a valid out of state teaching license and National Board Certification from NBPTS.  
  • The state of Virginia has signed the 2005-2010 NASDTEC Interstate Contract and will award their highest level certificate to any person who has obtained National Board Certification in an area corresponding to that for which certification is sought, provided the applicant also holds a comparable and valid certificate issued by any Member state and has complied with any requirements of the receiving state regarding experience, degrees held, citizenship, and moral, ethical, physical, and mental fitness, and completion of any post-baccalaureate study required by the receiving Member.
