South Carolina is pleased to announce that funding is available to help offset the cost of the assessment fee. This funding is made possible through a Federal Subsidy grant from the United States Department of Education. State Information


This page reflects the most recent information available to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards at the time of posting. Incentives listed below are offered at the discretion of the individual local agencies or contracts and are subject to change. The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is not responsible for the accuracy of the information found herein. Please contact the appropriate local or state agency directly to confirm the incentives listed and contact us with any updates at outreach@nbpts.org.

 

  • According to Proviso 1A.14  Public school classroom teachers to include teachers employed at the special schools or classroom teachers who work with classroom teachers to include teachers employed at the special schools who are certified by the State Board of Education and who have been certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards or completed the application process prior to July 1, 2010 shall be paid a $7,500 salary supplement beginning July 1 in the year following the year of achieving certification, beginning with 2009 applicants.  The $7,500 supplement shall be adjusted on a pro rata basis for the teacher’s FTE and paid to the teacher in accordance with the district’s payroll procedure.  In addition, teachers who have applied prior to July 1, 2010 and are certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards shall enter a recertification cycle for their South Carolina certificate consistent with the recertification cycle for National Board certification. 
  • According to Proviso 1A.47.    Public school classroom teachers to include teachers employed at the special schools or classroom teachers who work with classroom teachers to include teachers employed at the special schools who are certified by the State Board of Education and who complete the application process on or after July 1, 2010 shall be paid a $5,000 salary supplement in the year of achieving certification.  The $5,000 salary supplement shall be added to the annual pay of the teacher, not to exceed ten years of the national certificate.  However, the $5,000 supplement shall be adjusted on a pro rata basis for the teacher’s FTE and paid to the teacher in accordance with the district’s payroll procedure.  Beginning July 1, 2010, up to nine hundred applications shall be processed annually.  
 
  • South Carolina grants certification to anyone from out of state who has National Board certification and a valid educator certificate in the area of certification from that state, without any additional requirements (e.g. test scores, courses).
  • The state of South Carolina has signed the 2005-2010 NASDTEC Interstate Contract and will award their highest level certificate to any person who has obtained National Board Certification in an area corresponding to that for which certification is sought, provided the applicant also holds a comparable and valid certificate issued by any Member state and has complied with any requirements of the receiving state regarding experience, degrees held, citizenship, and moral, ethical, physical, and mental fitness, and completion of any post-baccalaureate study required by the receiving Member.
